Before the Datsun 240Z burst onto the scene more than four decades ago, the sports car was preserve of Europe and America. Until that point, Japan's motor industry hadn't contemplated anything as bold. But that classic rear-wheel drive 'Z' showed Nissan was a quick learner and it instantly captured the imagination of sports car enthusiasts all over the world.

The spirit of that pioneering 'Z' lives on in the latest Nissan 370Z. Like the 240Z, the 370Z - launched in 2009 - is powered by a six-cylinder engine and provides genuine excitement thanks to its performance oriented rear-wheel drive chassis. Like its forebear, its name indicates the size of engine under the bonnet: the original had 2.4-litres while the 370's V6 power pack displaces 3.7-litres.

But times change. Where the 240Z made do with 150bhp, the Nissan 370Z has more than double that, while 40 years of chassis development mean the latest version has levels of ride comfort, handling ability and safety that the original could only dream about.

And it's just got better. The Nissan 370Z GT Edition offers more for less. As well as 19inch RAYS forged alloy wheels in place of 18inch wheels, special body colours and unique GT stripes, the GT Edition actually costs less than the standard car.

As the name implies, the GT Edition highlights Nissan's presence in GT racing on the world stage. As well as its continuing commitment to Super GT in Japan, Nissan has been one of the leading lights in the new GT1 World Championship, winning the prestigious Tourist Trophy in 2010 with the fearsome GT-R. The Nissan Z family has been a race winner in the FIA GT4 European Cup since its inception and competes annually in various 24 hour races - the highlight being the Nürburgring 24 hours.

The Nissan 370Z GT4 Cup race car has raced toe to toe against competition from Aston Martin, Porsche and BMW across Europe in the real world while it is also the racing gamers' vehicle of choice in the virtual world.

An innovative link with Gran Turismo 5 game for PlayStation® 3 has seen cyber racers compete against each other to win a drive in a real 370Z GT4 cup car. The 2011 GT Academy series is about to start with on-line gamers ready to swap the virtual world for the real thing.

The best will become part of the Nissan GT Academy, a motor racing ladder that could take top drivers from local series through the European Blancpain Endurance series right the way to international GT1 World Championship.

Nissan 370Z GT Edition in detail

The Nissan 370Z GT Edition recognises its heritage with a nod to the 1970s and the birth of the original Z car: special side stripes.

Grey 'GT' stripes running along the flanks of the car contrast with the each of the special edition's three body colours - metallic black, pearl white and Black Rose, the latter shade exclusive to GT Edition. The exterior is set off by the standard 19inch RAYS forged alloy wheels, which are finished in a dramatic anthracite colour.

The Nissan 370Z GT Edition introduces a number of significant suspension and equipment improvements which have also been adopted by the standard Coupé. In deference to the higher average speeds routinely enjoyed in Europe, the changes have been engineered by technicians from Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE). The principal modification has been to retune the dampers to provide the ideal balance between ride comfort and high-speed handling.

Equipment changes include the arrival of a rear view parking camera as part of the Nissan Premium Connect satellite navigation option and the standard fitment of a tyre pressure monitoring system. The advanced seven-speed automatic option now has a snow mode which, when applied, sets the car off in second gear and controls engine revs to prevent wheel spin on ice or snow. Refinement is enhanced by revisions to underbody insulation to reduce road noise.

Unchanged is the Nissan 370Z's exceptional 3.7-litre V6 engine. A development of the unit that powered the 350Z, the all-alloy 24-valve twin cam not only develops more power and torque but is also more response, more refined and more fuel efficient.

The addition of VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) technology helps deliver electrifying performance, the engine developing 328PS and an impressive 363Nm of torque. It is coupled to a short throw six-speed sports manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic.

When in S-Mode, the manual transmission features Nissan's Synchro Rev Control to ensures perfect rev matching when the driver is changing gear, delivering perfect 'heel and toe' changes every time.

Sensors on the clutch and on the gear lever itself monitor driver actions to blip the throttle on down shifts and maintain constant engine revs when changing up. As the sensors detect clutch pedal movement, the SRC system is primed, coming into operation when the gear lever is moved. By matching this information to vehicle speed, SRC knows whether the driver is slowing for a corner or changing up through the 'box.

Downshift Rev Matching is a feature on the automatic gearbox, too, which also has Adaptive Shift Control which learns a driving style and adjust shift patterns accordingly.

The Nissan 370Z's chassis is a car enthusiast's dream: double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear end makes the most of Nissan's agile FM (Front Midships) rear-drive platform.

With a shorter wheelbase, wider track and stiffer shell than its predecessor, the Nissan 370Z has starred on track as well as on road. The innovative GT Academy programme takes computer gamers who have become Gran Turismo experts on PlayStation 3 and turns them into real race drivers. Now in its third season, winners will again race for a place on the grid in a GT4 race prepared Nissan 370Z at the Dubai 24 hours in January 2012 and, perhaps, on to the GT pinnacle, GT1.

Be assured that this is the real thing. Inaugural GT Academy champion Lucas Ordoñez will race in the Le Mans 24 hours with a Nissan-powered Le Mans Prototype car. Ordonez said: "Two and a half years ago I was at home racing on the PlayStation. I'm now a racing driver thanks to PlayStation and Nissan. I can't wait to race at the most famous race in the world in June for the SIGNATEC NISSAN team; it really is a dream come true. "

"The 370Z is an iconic sports car and the GT Edition underlines its appeal to enthusiasts everywhere," said Pierre Loing, Vice President Product Planning, Nissan International SA. "The combination of outstanding performance and the dramatic looks of this very special Nissan 370Z more than lives up to the heritage of its illustrious forebear while its strong links to the race track shows its true pedigree."

The GT500 specification Nissan GT-R racing car, which will vie for the 2008 SUPER GT series, will make its public debut at the upcoming "Tokyo Auto Salon with NAPAC", followed by the "Osaka Auto Messe 2008", the country's two largest annual custom car shows.

The new works livery - which will be featured across Nissan motorsports activities during the 2008 season - will be unveiled on the race car. Nissan will vie for the SUPER GT Championship, one of the world's most demanding GT race series, with the new machine built on the same multi-performance super car concept of the Nissan GT-R road car.

The new livery resulted from close collaboration between Nissan's design team and NISMO, its motorsports affiliate company, and incorporates feedback from members of the "Club NISMO" fan club.

The signature wide "brush stroke" design motif, synonymous with the current Fairlady Z race car, was carried forward into the new GT-R racing car as Nissan's racing fans worldwide could immediately associate with the design. The livery design swipes forward from the rear in bold red and black - the red symbolises the passion for racing, while the black signifies the high performance of the new Nissan GT-R.

2010 TOYOTA RAV4 EV Concept

Toyota U.S.A., Inc. debuted the second-generation Toyota RAV4 EV Concept at a news conference at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. A total of 35 vehicles will be built for a demonstration and evaluation program through 2011, aiming at market arrival of a fully-engineered vehicle in 2012. The fully-engineered vehicle will have a target range of 100 miles in actual road driving patterns, in a wide range of climates and conditions.

"When we decided to work together on the RAV4 EV, President Akio Toyoda wanted to adopt a new development model that incorporated Tesla's streamlined, quick-action approach," said Jim Lentz, president and chief operating officer, TMS. "The result was a hybrid - a new decision and approval process and a development style that our engineers refer to as "fast and flexible."

Led by the Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America (TEMA) Technical Center in Michigan, the new development model helped reduce development time without compromising product quality. The team has accomplished this by approaching the project as they would a typical mid-cycle "major-minor" product change. Specifically, midway through a generation, the team began with a fully engineered current-generation RAV4, to which was added a major powertrain option, along with minor feature and cosmetic changes.

Tesla was responsible for building and supplying the battery, as well as other related parts, that met specific Toyota engineering specifications in performance, quality and durability. Toyota was responsible for development and manufacturing leadership and the seamless integration of the powertrain.

"From the beginning, the customer experience has been the focus," said Lentz. "In other words, how do we deliver an unconventional product to mainstream customers that is compelling and affordable and that offers an acceptable level of daily convenience."

A large part of the team's focus on the customer experience targeted driveability. In this case, the end goal is a vehicle with driveability characteristics as close to the conventional RAV4 as possible.

For example, the demonstration vehicle weighs approximately 220 pounds more than the current RAV4 V6 yet it will accelerate from zero to sixty nearly as quickly.

This added weight factor required significant retuning of major components and a prioritized focus on weight distribution. Not only were suspension and steering modified significantly, major components needed to be relocated to better balance the increased mass of the battery pack.

The demonstration vehicle Toyota is currently testing is powered by a lithium metal oxide battery with useable output rated in the mid-30 kwh range. However, many decisions regarding both the product, as well as the business model, have not been finalized. Battery size and final output ratings, as well as pricing and volume projections of the vehicle Toyota plans to bring to market in 2012, have not been decided.

As for a final assembly location, Toyota is considering many options and combinations. The basic vehicle will continue to be built at its Canadian production facility in Woodstock, Ontario. Tesla will build the battery and related parts and components at its new facility in Palo Alto, Calif. The method and installation location of the Tesla components into the vehicle is being discussed.

The Toyota RAV4 EV received several distinct exterior styling changes including a new front bumper, grille, fog lamps and head lamps. New EV badging and the custom "mutually exclusive" paint color, completed the transformation. The interior received custom seat trim, multimedia dash displays, push-button shifter and dashboard meters. The RAV4 platform brings a 73-cubic-foot cargo area with rear seats folded down - no cargo space was lost in the conversion to an electric powertrain.

In 1997, Toyota brought to market the first-generation Toyota RAV4 EV in response to the California zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate and was the first manufacturer to meet the mandate's Memo of Agreement on volume sales. Powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack, the vehicle had a range of between 80-110 miles on a single charge. From model year 1998 to model year 2003, only 1,484 vehicles were sold or leased in the U.S. 746 first-generation Toyota RAV4 EVs are still on the road (www.toyotarav4ev.com).

"Price and convenience proved to be critical success factors and they remain so today," said Lentz. "But much has changed in the last few years. Most importantly, the growing level of awareness that sustainable mobility will come at a cost that must be shared by the automakers, government and the consumer."

Toyota's approach to sustainable mobility focuses on the world's future reliance on mobility systems tailored to specific regions or markets, rather than individual models or technologies. It acknowledges that no one technology will be the "winner" and that a mobility system in Los Angeles will probably look very different from one in Dallas or New York or London or Shanghai.

Toyota's comprehensive technology strategy is a portfolio approach that includes a long-term commitment to hydrogen fuel cells, plug-in hybrids and battery electrics all driven by the further proliferation of conventional gas-electric hybrids, like Prius, as its core technology.

Toyota has announced that coinciding with the arrival of the Toyota RAV4 EV in 2012 it will launch, in key global markets, the Prius PHV (plug-in hybrid) and a small EV commuter vehicle. It will also launch, in key global markets, its first commercialized hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in calendar year 2015, or sooner. Finally, by the end of 2012, Toyota will add seven all new (not next-generation) hybrid models to its portfolio.

2012 TOYOTA Verso-S

On sale from February 2011, the new Toyota Verso-S marks Toyota's re-entry into the B-MPV market, a segment the company itself created with the Yaris Verso in 1999.

The B-MPV segment has almost tripled in size since 2002. Driven by downsizing, this growth incorporates an increasingly diverse cross-section of customers, many of whom appreciate the interior flexibility and loadspace offered by a Multi-Purpose Vehicle.

Supporting this significant growth are families switching over from conventional B-segment hatchbacks and, more significantly, empty nesters and seniors downsizing from C-segment cars. For them, a B-MPV is not only a rational purchase essential to making the most of leisure time, but must also offer the levels of space, comfort, equipment and quality they have experienced in a higher segment vehicle.

Toyota's new B-MPV is less than 4 metres long. This makes the vehicle highly manoeuvrable and easy to drive in the urban environment. Conversely, careful attention to detail in every aspect of its interior design has maximised spaciousness, comfort and perceived quality throughout. The Toyota Verso-S offers front seat headroom, rear seat roominess and luggage capacity to rival that of C-segment cars.

The new Toyota Verso-s: A Space Revolution for Five
Small, spacious and smart, the new Verso-S showcases excellent efficiency in space management. It combines highly competitive interior space with the shortest overall length - just 3,990 mm - of any MPV in the European B-segment.

Design
Toyota's new B-MPV is instantly recognisable through its neat, compact and appealing exterior styling. It features short front and rear overhangs, powerful, sweeping coachwork lines and a large panoramic sunroof. The full-length side glazing with blacked out pillars reinforces the maximisation of interior space within the bodyshell.

Within a long, 2,550 mm wheelbase, the new Toyota Verso-S's wide opening front and rear doors give access to a spacious, practical and flexible interior. The interior design focuses not only on ergonomic excellence, but also on the high perceived quality and visual and tactile appeal demanded by increasingly discerning B-segment customers.

The precise, clean lines of the two-layer dashboard and sculpted door panels are clad in soft-touch materials. And the functional, easy-to-read instrument cluster and centre console are trimmed with crisp, brushed metal surrounds to further enhance the quality perception.

Passenger Accommodation and Loadspace
The streamlined design of the front seats, doors and trim panels maximises interior space, giving the new B-MPV class-leading front passenger headroom, rear seat knee room, and loadspace length and volume.

Raised front and rear seating hip point heights have been optimised for both good visibility and ease getting in and out of the car. Driver comfort has been further enhanced by the addition of seat height adjustment, an armrest and the placing of the gear lever as close to the three-spoke steering wheel as possible.

The 60:40 split rear seats feature a centre armrest and a one-touch, fold-flat mechanism. Unique to the B-MPV segment, the rear seats may also be remotely folded from the cargo area, with tilt down levers fitted to both sides of the loadspace side walls within easy reach of the tailgate.

The top-hinged tailgate is cut into the Toyota Verso-S's rear bumper, giving lip-free access to the loadspace. The 760 mm long loadspace floor incorporates a flexible, lightweight, two-stage cargo deck board. It may be positioned at bumper level to give a flat floor throughout and a 336 litre cargo volume, or lowered with one hand to increase the loadspace depth by 95 mm and the cargo volume to 393 litres.

With the board removed altogether, the spare wheel well is included within the loadspace, increasing cargo volume to a total of 430 litres. And with the rear seats folded flat, the total loadspace volume increases to 1,388 litres.

Despite the maximisation of interior roominess, the comprehensive array of flexible storage solutions essential to a B-segment MPV has not been compromised. The Toyota Verso-S features bottle and cup holders, generous front and rear door pockets and a versatile, three-level, dashboard storage compartment.

Toyota first, Touch Screen Multimedia Interface
Unique to the B-MPV segment, the new, 6.1 inch, full colour, Touch Screen Multimedia system provides customers with a comprehensive multimedia interface. At launch, it will incorporate AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, a USB port for the connection of portable music players and the facility to display iPod album cover art, and a rear parking camera.

A DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) compatible digital radio and Navi-Box will become available as an option at a later date. Navi- Box not only functions as a multimedia booster, offering as the facility to both view pictures and sort music from a USB source, but also offers enhanced satellite navigation functions.

It incorporates speed camera warnings, sign posts motorways, and allows users to access numerous Google-based connected services. For instance, Points of Interest may be downloaded from the internet and entered as destinations, and other applications include social networking, fuel prices, news and weather reports.

Grades, Equipment and Trim
A simple, three grade strategy offers customers comprehensive equipment specifications throughout the Toyota Verso-S range. Even entry grade models feature seven airbags, electric front windows, power steering, a 4 speaker radio/CD/MP3 player with USB port, VSC, ABS, EBD and BA active safety systems, LED interior lighting and the remote rear seat fold flat system fitted as standard.

Mid grade models add the flexible loadspace floor, manual airconditioning, a leather steering wheel and gear knob, steering wheel switches, front and rear armrests and a new Touch Screen Multimedia interface. High grade models further add automatic air-conditioning, electro-chromatic rear-view mirror, dusk- and rain sensor, smart entry, 16 inch alloy wheels and front and rear electric windows.

An extensive list of highly-affordable options includes a number of Option Packs tailored to enhance on-board comfort and convenience, full leather seats with driver and front passenger seat heating, and a large, frameless, panoramic sunroof with integral power operated blind.

The Toyota Verso-S will be available with a choice of 15" wheel caps or 16" alloys, and 9 exterior colours, including a new Satin Blue metallic finish. Interior trim options include a choice of black or beige colour schemes with fabric upholstery and high quality black leather on high grade models.

Safety
The new Toyota Verso-S offers a high level of active, passive and pedestrian impact safety performance.

All Toyota Verso-S versions are equipped, as standard, with seven SRS airbags; driver and front passenger airbags, a driver's knee airbag, front side airbags and full-length side curtain shield airbags. All front and rear seats feature three-point, ELR seatbelts, and the front seatbelts are equipped with a pre-tensioner and force-limiter function.

Fitted as standard, a comprehensive range of active safety systems includes an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

Driving performance: Class-Leading Economy
The new Toyota Verso-S is available with either a 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine or a 1.4 litre D-4D turbodiesel. Both engines are mated, as standard, to 6-speed manual transmissions. The 1.33 litre petrol engine may be equipped with an optional, Multidrive S, continuously variable transmission which features a 7-speed, sequential paddle shift mode. Both engines comply with Euro 5 emission standards.

Both powertrains benefit fully from the low friction components, super-lightweight compact design and enhanced combustion efficiency inherent in Toyota Optimal Drive. Combined with comprehensive weight saving measures and highly aerodynamic styling which gives the Toyota Verso-S a drag coefficient of just Cd 0.297, this awards the new Toyota B-MPV class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

1.33 litre Dual VVT-i Petrol Engine
The 1.33 litre petrol engine is equipped with Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) and a remarkably high compression ratio of 11.5:1. It generates 73 kW/ 99 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 126 Nm at 4,000 rpm, combining strong dynamic performance with class-leading fuel economy of just 5.5 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of only 127 g/km.

1.4 litre D-4D Diesel Engine
The 1.4 litre D-4D common rail, intercooled turbodiesel employs the very latest piezo-electric technology and is equipped, as standard, with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). It generates maximum power of 66 kW / 90 DIN hp at 3,800 rpm and maximum torque of 205 Nm at 1,800-2,800 rpm.

Benefiting from an exceptionally high injection pressure of 160 MPa, the piezo-electric injectors can supply larger, more precise volumes of diesel at twice the speed of conventional fuel injectors. Because of their high operating speed, they can deliver multiple injections per combustion cycle, optimising the combustion process for responsive performance, excellent fuel economy of 4.3 l/100 km and reduced CO2 emissions of just 113 g/km.

Multidrive S and MultiMode Transmissions
The 1.33 litre petrol engine's optional Multidrive S transmission showcases Toyota's latest Continuously Variable Transmission technology. Multidrive S features a manual override, sequential, 7-speed mode operable by either the gearshift lever or steering wheel mounted paddle-shifts. Mated to this seamless transmission, the 1.33 litre petrol engine returns 5.2 l/100 km, and generates CO2 emissions of 120 g/km.

Available as an option on 1.4 D-4D diesel versions of the Toyota Verso-S, MultiMode is an automated manual transmission with a fully automatic shift mode and no clutch pedal3. It offers the driver a choice of two, fully automatic gear change modes or a manual, sequential gear change with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. When equipped with MultiMode transmission, the 1.4 D-4D Toyota Verso-S returns 4.4 l/100 km and generates CO2 emissions of 115 g/km.
